89th Oscars Reaction – All Winners, Losers and mix-up’s

Oh, what a night!

The 8th Annual Academy Awards took place last night in Hollywood and while it will be remembered for Moonlight taking home the big prize of Best Picture, it’s the “how” it won the award that will stick in the memory for years, maybe even decades to come.

Barry Jenkins’ sublime film won three big awards (Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor the other two) and while there was shock from many at its astounding win, it’s the confusion that surrounded the final prize was perhaps the biggest shock of all. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented the award and as Beatty opened the envelope he had, he seemed to make a bit of a joke about who had one – in actuality, the envelope he had actually read “Emma Stone, La La Land”. Obviously confused, he showed the card to Dunaway who, after the pauses, simply looked at the card and saw La La Land on it. Moments later, producers and floor managers of the show raced on to the stage, as did host Jimmy Kimmel, to tell the flabbergasted room that Moonlight had won.

Here’s the video of what happened:

BBC have reported that two sets of cards are kept backstage for the presenters, in case something was to happen to the others. So the 2nd best actress envelope was handed to Beatty rather than the Best Picture one, hence the confusion. In another strange turn of events, it transpired that Emma Stone had kept the other Best Actress envelope on her after she was given her award by Leonardo DiCaprio.

It was a mad, crazy end to a pretty good ceremony that had seen La La Land win six awards including Best Actress, Best Director and Best Song amongst others, while Casey Affleck, Viola Davis and Moonlight’s Mahershala Ali winning in the other Acting categories. Kenneth Lonergan won Best Original Screenplay for Manchester by the Sea while The Salesman, which had a free screening in Trafalgar Square yesterday evening, won best Foreign Language film.

A wild, unprecedented night in Hollywood that will be the talk of the town for weeks, maybe months from now. You can view the full list of winners below:
