Mad Mad: Fury Road has inspired numerous theories among fans. One of the most fascinating theories surrounding director George Miller’s action magnum opus is that Max isn’t Max Rockatansky, who was played by Mel Gibson in the last three movies.

According to this fan theory, Hardy’s Max is really ‘The Feral Kid’ from Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. This theory is supporting by the fact that Rockatansky gives The Federal Kid a wind-up music box, which shares a resemblance to the one Tom Hardy’s Max possesses.

IGN recently spoke with George Miller about the theory and he responded, “That’s great… No, unfortunately but that’s a great idea. Only because at the end of Mad Max 2, it turns out the narrator is the Feral Kid as an old man, and he says, ‘He only lives now in my memories.’”

IGN also told Miller that this theory plays into the ending of The Road Warrior, seeing how Fury Road take place on the Feral Kid’s journey to becoming a tribal leader. Miller went on to say, “I think that’s a reasonable interpretation, but not in my mind.”

Of course Miller almost mentioned, “You interpret the story according to the way you see the world.” If everything is in the eye of the beholder, maybe the Fury Road fan theory is true to some extent.
