The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild nominations are in with several notable surprises. Despite receiving somewhat mixed reviews, Trumbo leads the pack with nominations for Best Cast Ensemble, Best Male Actor for Bryan Cranston, and Best Supporting Female Actor for Hellen Mirren. Speaking of Mirren, she pulled off another surprise nomination in the Lead Female Actor category for her work in Woman in Gold. Sarah Silver also came out of nowhere in the Lead Female Actor race with her performance in I Smile Back.

One of the most pleasant surprises was Straight Outta Compton scoring a Best Cast Ensemble nomination along with Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, and Spotlight. It’s also great to see young Jacob Tremblay in the Best Supporting Male Actor race for his extraordinary work in Room. Sadly missing from the Best Supporting Male Actor lineup is Sylvester Stallone, who had been gaining momentum for his comeback as Rocky Balboa in Creed.

Arguably the most curious snub is The Martian. The box office favorite had an exceptional ensemble and a wonderful lead performance from Matt Damon at its core. Yet, it didn’t show up anywhere here.
