Whenever a man and a woman team up in a movie, audiences typically expect them to get together by the end. According to John Boyega, however, Finn and Rey’s friendship won’t necessarily blossom into romance as the Star Wars saga continues.
“I mean, we didn’t establish a romance in seven; we never played it that way,” Boyega informed Variety. “Daisy and I, we’re friends.”
While Finn and Rey’s didn’t become romantically involved in The Force Awakens, something could still happen between them in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Boyega says that their relationship might not play out like the shippers expect, though.
“So the romance thing is something that’s going to be interesting in the next installment,” he noted. “It’s not going to go the way you think it’s going to go.”
Directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: Episode: VIII hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
