Warcraft may be a dud at the domestic box office, but the film has been a huge financial hit overseas.

According to Box Office Mojo, Duncan Jones’ film has made an estimated $377.6 million worldwide, grossing roughly $200 million in China alone. This makes Warcraft the most successful video game movie of all time. The previous record was held by Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, which made $335 million.

In the US, the fantasy epic fell 73% this past weekend. The film thus had the third biggest first weekend to second weekend domestic box office drop ever, following 2009’s Friday the 13th and Fifty Shades of Grey. In China, though, it had the largest foreign film debut in the country’s history.

The film’s success goes to show just how significant the Chinese market is becoming. Will China overtake the United States as the biggest movie market? Warcraft could just be the beginning…
