Following the scathing reviews from critics for DC’s Suicide Squad, the cast of the film have responded.
Much of the cast defended the movie at the European Premiere last night. Cara Delevingne, who plays the Enchantress, told Reuters:
“The critics have been absolutely horrific, they’re really, really horrible. You know, I just don’t think they like superhero movies,”
Delevingne added that while “this movie isn’t perfect,” it was made for the fans. Will Smith, who plays Deadshot, also reiterated that:
“I think people had expectations that may have been different, but I’m excited for the fans to get to vote,” Smith told Reuters.
Director David Ayer who already took to twitter to defend the film, continued to do so at the premiere:
“I made the movie for real people who live in the real world. I made the movie for people who actually love movies and go and see movies.”
Jay Hernandez, who plays El Diablo, was very hurt by the reviews, as he told DigitalSpy:
“Yeah I am bothered about it, I think it sucks, obviously we worked hard and tried to give the fans what they wanted. It’s weird that some of the criticism I heard was that it was ‘too much like a comic book’. So the critics can kiss my ass.”
Rick Flag aka. Joel Kinnaman also told the site that the fan’s opinions are more important than critics:
“You know, of course you want critical acclaim, of course, but what matters is what the fans think. We’re really proud of this film, we loved making it, everybody on the film has become really close friends and this is like a work of love and I hope the fans like it.”
The film’s negative reviews even led more than 18,000 people to sign an online petition calling for Rotten Tomatoes to be shut down after it gave the film an average 31% score. While Jared Leto’s Joker also got panned by critics.
The film is still expected to gross $125 million domestically when it opens this weekend, according to box office analysts. And you can read our actually quite positive review of the film here.
