Selma director Ava DuVernay is now the the first black woman to direct a $100 million-budgeted movie.
DuVernay is getting the big-budget for Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time which stars Oprah Winfrey.
Deadline made the discovery when the film appeared on a list of movies that will receive California tax incentives, DuVernay has now confirmed the news on twitter:
Not the first capable of doing so. Not by a long shot. Thanks to @DisneyStudios for breaking this glass with me. https://t.co/iXJ9pgV7eP

A shame. Hollywood and audiences have missed some wonderful voices. High hopes for change. https://t.co/5TrQRV0pO9

However, DuVernay is clearly disappointed that it’s taken this long for the record to be broken.
The only other female directors to have broken the barrier are Kathryn Bigelow for 2002’s K-19: The Widowmaker and Patty Jenkins for the upcoming Wonder Woman.
DuVernay’s next film coming out is The 13th which hits Netflix on October 7th. While A Wrinkle in Time gets a release on 28 July 2017.
