Suicide Squad might’ve bombed with critics, but the latest DC flick hit its target at the box office.
According to Box Office Mojo, David Ayer‘s film came in at #1 with an estimated $135.1 million, having the biggest August opening weekend ever. Guardians of the Galaxy previously held this record with $94.3 million. Of course Guardians of the Galaxy also got much better reviews, which helped it to prevail at the box office. Meanwhile, Suicide Squad may follow in the footsteps of Batman v Superman, which opened quite well and then plummeted during its second week. With a budget of $175 million, the film will need strong legs at the domestic and international box office to show a significant profit.
Jason Bourne claimed the #2 spot with an estimated $22.7 million, dropping 61.6% after it’s opening. Bad Moms came in third with $14.2 million, The Secret Life of Pets was #4 with $11.6 million, and Star Trek Beyond rounded out the top five with $10.2 million.
