Tom Hanks wants to “fall in love with Channing Tatum” in the Splash remake

Earlier this year, Disney announced a Splash remake with Channing Tatum playing a merman, and now Tom Hanks has jokingly announced his intentions in starring alongside Tatum as his love interest.

In the 1984 original film, Hanks reunites with a mermaid who saved him from drowning as a boy and they fall in love, not knowing what she is.

However, in the reboot, there will be a role reversal as Tatum plays a Merman who saves Jillian Bell as a girl only to reunite with her years later.

Ron Howard is returning to produce the movie and when interviewed with Hanks by the BBC, he spoke about the upcoming film and the decision to swap the gender roles.

“Jillian Bell and Channing Tatum love working together and Jillian loves that movie [Splash] and she said ‘why don’t you be Daryl Hannah and I’ll be Tom Hanks?”’ said Howard.

Hanks had other ideas though as he jokingly declared his interest in starring opposite Tatum:

“No I’d like to reprise my role as Alan Bauer and I’d like to fall in love with Channing Tatum and I’d like to find happiness at last, where we’re both accepted for who we are. I think that would be a worthwhile remake.”

The remake will be written by Maria Lewis-Ryan but don’t expect a Hanks and Tatum Splash bromance anytime soon.
