Neill Blomkamp’s Alien sequel has a “slim” chance of happening, according to the director.

Blomkamp, who helmed District 9, had revealed concept art for his planned Alien film. However, the project now looks to be dead.

When asked by a fan on Twitter what the film’s chances are, Blomkamp gave a short but direct answer:

The news comes of no huge surprise though, as back in 2015, his sequel was put on hold ‘indefinitely’ by Fox, as they planned to go ahead with Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant instead.

Michael Biehn did look set to reprise his role as Hicks for Blomkamp’s production, revealing to /Film that “Alien 5 was to set up a now-grown Newt as the franchise’s new star”.

“It would keep the franchise alive, and the studios would make money because that’s what the bottom line is now: money.” said Biehn.

Sigourney Weaver and Biehn were both seemingly enthusiastic about the film, but it looks unlikely to happen at all now. Alien fans can at least look forward to Covenant though, which hits theaters this May.
