Mark Hamill and Daisy Ridley have revealed their initial concerns over Rian Johnson’s script for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Hamill, who of course plays Luke Skywalker, told ABC Nightline that when first reading Johnson’s script, he complained to the writer and director, as he “disagree[d]” with his character’s new direction:
“When I read [episode] eight I told Rian, ‘I fundamentally disagree with virtually everything you’ve decided about my character’. It was as shocking to me to read what Rian had written as I’m sure it will be for the audience,” he said.
Ridley, who portrays Rey, also had issues with the script, which she addressed with Johnson:
“I went to Rian’s office and was like, ‘we need to have a talk about what’s happening here’,”
She also said at the Star Wars Celebration that The Last Jedi was rather “different” to what’s gone before:
“I’ve spoken to a number of people that have seen a rough cut, and everyone’s like, ‘It’s different. It’s different.’”

It’s clear even just from the first trailer, that The Last Jedi, will have a darker tone and quite a different feel to The Force Awakens. It’s a risky thing to do after the last movie was so highly-perceived. However, Johnson should be given the freedom to stamp his own mark on the film, and we should trust him, after previously impressing as a director, most notably with Looper and Breaking Bad.
What may be a slight concern though, was Johnson’s appearance at the Star Wars Celebration over the weekend. He admitted that he had been “scared” and “nervous” to helm such a big film. Episode 7‘s J.J Abrams on the other hand seemed a much more cool and confident man at the Celebration in 2015, with more experience to boast, having directed big movie franchises Mission Impossible and Star Trek.
The script may also be a worry, from the trailer it seems likely that Rey will spend a majority of the film being trained by Luke, although it will be exciting to see this, it could essentially limit the characters. Rey developed some great friendships with the likes of Finn and Leia in The Force Awakens, but that’s something we may see much less of in The Last Jedi.
Still, it’s far too early to have any major concerns, and we should be encouraged by a promising first trailer, which you can check out below. The film hits theaters on December 15th.
