There is a new trend doing the rounds in Hollywood concerning superheroes which is that R-rated is the way forward. Deadpool set the standard last year, grossing over $700million while this year’s Logan, the final Wolverine film to star Hugh Jackman, has earned over $600million at the box office.
But while the 20th Century Fox-owned Marvel properties may be taking the more adult-orientated, Marvel Studios aren’t so keen to follow suit. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 about to hit cinemas, Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, has been speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the film and was asked about the influx of the R-rated comic-book movie and while he praised their efforts, he didn’t seem to keen to replicate them.
Feige said:
“My takeaway from both of those films is not the R rating, it’s the risk they took… The chances they took, the creative boundaries that they pushed. That should be the takeaway for everyone.”
In addition, the site also asked Feige about his impressions on the news that Josh Brolin, who plays Marvel big bad Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and it’s sequel, has joined Deadpool 2 as another baddie, Cable. While some were surprised by the news that the star was playing two comic-book villains, Feige doesn’t see a problem, saying:
“We don’t have anything written into our contracts about other roles that people can do… Indiana Jones and Han Solo are the same person… it hasn’t been a problem. And I think Thanos and Cable are two very different characters.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 his UK cinemas on April 28th.
