Warren Beatty speaks again about Oscar-gate and it’s fallout

For all of the performances Warren Beatty has given over the years, in films such as Reds, Bonnie and Clyde, Dick Tracy and Bulworth, he will probably now be remembered for one thing: his appearance at this year’s Academy Awards and the blunder which saw La La Land incorrectly awarded Best Picture instead of Moonlight due to an envelope mix-up.

Beatty, along with his Bonnie and Clyde co-star Faye Dunaway, presented the Best Picture award at the ceremony back in February and were at the forefront of an error made by the PriceWaterhouseCoopers. And with the star’s new directorial film, Rules Don’t Apply, due in UK cinemas this week, Beatty has been speaking about the event. (via Metro)

Talking on ITV’s Lorraine show, Beatty said:

“It struck me [as] kind of funny that this moment that was so overly dramatised, you know, but then stuff happens… Some poor guy made a mistake, gave me the wrong [envelope]”

“In some ways like Howard Hughes, the mystery about it all is kind of goofy.”

“They just gave me the wrong envelope and I’m not supposed to open the envelope until I’m walking out.. Then I look at the envelope, I mean I look at what comes out the envelope and I thought, this is mysterious, maybe it’s a misprint, but let’s not make too much out of it.

But my obligation was then to, once the envelope was open, was to hand it to Faye [Dunaway] so she could then read what was there and she did.”

Rules Don’t Apply, directed and starring Beatty alongside Lily Collins (Love, Rosie) and Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo), is in UK cinemas this Friday, April 21st.
