Elizabeth Banks has criticized Stephen Spielberg for the lack of female leads in his films.
The Power Rangers actress and Pitch Perfect 2 director had a pop at the iconic filmmaker during the Women in Film award ceremony yesterday:
“I went to Indiana Jones and Jaws and every movie Steven Spielberg ever made. By the way, he’s never made a movie with a female lead. Sorry, Steven. I don’t mean to call your ass out, but it’s true,” she said as she collected an award.
Banks may want to get her facts straight before making such a claim though, as Spielberg has actually made two movies with female leads; 1974’s The Sugarland Express and 1986’s The Color Purple.
Whoopi Goldberg was nominated for an Oscar for her turn in The Color Purple.
Banks does still have a fair point, as the majority of Spielberg’s films have featured male protagonists. His next movie however, (The Papers) has Meryl Streep in the leading role and tells the true story of America’s first female newspaper publisher, so Banks can’t have any complaints about that!
