After original director Colin Trevorrow left the director’s chair for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX, many filmmakers names were linked with the role but in the end, it was announced that J.J. Abrams was returning to “finish what he started”.

Abrams, of course, directed 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and helped bring about the dawning of a new era for the franchise with the film becoming the 3rd highest grossing release of all time with a whopping $2.068billion – as well as the biggest-opening weekend of all time with $247million. A tough order for the follow-up, The Last Jedi, to try to emulate but under writer/director Rian Johnson it looks like he may have just done it – and more.

One of the film’s stars, Domhnall Gleeson (who plays General Hux), has spoken this week about returning to the role and his thoughts of J.J. closing out the series, telling ComingSoon.net:

“Just as a fan I’m excited for J.J. to do ‘IX’ because he did such a good job on ‘VII,’… So I’ll look forward to seeing it or being in it, depending on whichever it is. There ya go, talk about hedging your bets!”

Gleeson returns alongside Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis and Carrie Fisher, with Benicio del Toro (Sicario) and Laura Dern (Big Little Lies) joining them for the film, which is released on December 15th.
