When it was announced that Colin Trevorrow was getting booted off Star Wars: Episode IX, a lot of people thought Last Jedi director Rian Johnson might replace him. They weren’t too far off base, as J. J. Abrams of The Force Awakens was brought back on board. Will Johnson be involved in the film at all, though?

Johnson has now confirmed with The Hollywood Reporter that he won’t play any role in the final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

“J.J. Abrams is doing a third movie. I’m not involved in it. They’ll be writing their own story but continuing on with what we did.”

It’ll be interesting to see how The Last Jedi stacks up against the other Star Wars films. If critics and audiences generally agree that it’s even better than The Force Awakens, there might be a campaign to bring Johnson back in some way. Of course we’re getting ahead of ourselves, as The Last Jedi doesn’t hit theaters until December 15.
