While We’re Young

You’ll often hear those in their mid-20s complain about getting old. Be it finding their first grey hair, or settling into a career that bears an uncanny resemblance to that of their parents’. But for those in their 40s, these years of exuberant vitality are the ones to romanticise over – or so we think. In Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young, Josh (Ben Stiller) and Cornelia (Naomi Watts) befriend younger married couple Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried), who offer them a whole new lease of life. What transpires is a film that anybody, no matter their age, can thoroughly enjoy.

John Wick

We all saw what the Taken franchise did for Liam Neeson – and with his exploits in the explosive action thriller John Wick, the very same could be about to happen to Keanu Reeves. He plays the titular protagonist who goes on a savage revenge mission to find – and kill – the men who broke into his house and took away his most valuable possessions. Fans of Reeves will be thrilled by this endeavour for sure – as will anybody who likes looking at really cute, little dogs.

Child 44

With a cast consisting of Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman and Noomi Rapace to name but a few, Daniel Espinosa’s fledging career in Hollywood continues with this affecting drama. Set in the Stalin-era Soviet Union, we watch on as a disgraced law enforcer investigates a series of barbaric child murders. Not exactly pleasant Sunday afternoon viewing, but a worthwhile trip to the cinema nonetheless.

A Little Chaos

Alan Rickman’s last directorial outing came in 1997 with The Winter Guest. Now, 18 years later, he presents A Little Chaos. We’ve waited almost two decades for this – and thankfully, it’s been worth the wait, as the picture is an indelible, charming period drama that features the star in the role of King Louis XIV. His co-stars are Kate Winslet and Matthias Schoenaerts – and with such quality actors, comes a quality cinematic experience: one that combines romance, drama and comedy to wonderful effect.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

Now this one goes without saying. Following the immense success of the quite incredible blockbuster The Avengers Assemble comes the eagerly anticipated follow-up that pits all of our very favourite Marvel creations together. From Captain America, to Iron Man, to the Hulk to Black Widow – there really is no reason whatsoever why you shouldn’t go to see this movie. With Joss Whedon at the helm once more, here’s a film you can even take your parents too, safe in the knowledge that they’re bound to enjoy themselves. Even Grandma would like it.

About Stefan Pape

Stefan Pape is a film critic and interviewer who spends most of his time in dark rooms, sipping on filter coffee and becoming perilously embroiled in the lives of others. He adores the work of Billy Wilder and Woody Allen, and won’t have a bad word said against Paul Giamatti.
