Alex Proyas on The Crow remake: ‘It would be nice if Hollywood kind of left it alone’
Before he was being battered by the critics for his current film Gods of Egypt, director Alex Proyas made a few cult classics back in the day – most notably Dark City and The Crow. The latter remains a special film not just for a lot of viewers, but its maker too; speaking with Collider, Proyas gave his thoughts on the idea of remaking it for modern audiences when questioned on the current efforts:
‘You know, I’ve moved on and I just feel like it’s… I personally feel like it’s kind of unnecessary. I’ve said this many times. I’ve completed the original movie to honor Brandon and that’s the sole reason I did it. I’m happy I did it for that reason. I sort of feel like it’s his legacy and I personally don’t have a lot of time for people trying to reignite that movie in other ways. So you know, to me, this is one situation where it would be nice if Hollywood kind of left it alone and let it remain Brandon Lee’s legacy.’
With all the obstacles The Crow remake has been hurdling over the past few years – first with Luke Evans exiting the lead role, followed by Jack Huston – it’s a miracle director Corin Hardy is keeping it alive in any form. Perhaps he should take some of Proyas’ advice?
