Director Peyton Reed, who is in talks to return and helm Ant-Man and The Wasp, has spoken on the importance of strong female leads in Superhero movies.

The Ant-Man director told MTV that he’s excited to explore and build upon Evangeline Lilly’s character, Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp.

“It’s such a no-brainer that there needs to be female heroes,” Reed said. “It’s about keeping the stories interesting and having fresh stories to tell. I always like that about Ant-Man and Wasp because it dealt with gender politics as well as superhero stuff.”

Reed is confident he’ll be returning to the director’s chair for the sequel, “We’re still in the middle of negotiation, but it’s looking pretty great,” he said. “I’m dying to come back and do the movie. I’m very excited about it.”

With both Bring It On and Down With Love on his resume, the director is no stranger to making movies that revolve around extraordinary women.

“It’s been important to me in all my movies,” he noted. “So to me it’s something that I’m just psyched to be able to explore in this movie.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp is set for a July 6, 2018 release.
