Visits to the Justice League set report a lighter, more fun movie – and the Flash steals the show

After the mauling Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice received from the critics and plenty of the audience, it looked like DC’s future in cinematic territory was doomed. But when a few dozen journalists were invited to the film set of Justice League, the next chapter, they were shown a clip of some footage completed by director Zack Snyder – and reactions seemed to be a lot more positive.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them debuts new poster and teases announcement

2016 feels like Harry Potter never went away; after 2011’s The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, it seemed like cinematic outings in the wizarding world had finished for good. But now, five years on, we’re revisiting the world during an earlier time period with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – and with Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne in the lead. Also starting this year is a new play fresh from the mind of JK Rowling, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The official Twitter for Fantastic Beasts debuted a new poster, which shows Redmayne overlooking a lushly designed period New York City.

Spider-Man: Homecoming cast grows with Hannibal Buress and more

The past week has seen the cast for Spider-Man: Homecoming grow exponentially, with the addition of Donald Glover (The Martian), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus) – not to mention the inclusion of MCU old-timer Robert Downey Jr., superhero veteran Michael Keaton and Peter Parker himself, Tom Holland – the film is shaping up to be a smorgasbord of talent. And another famous name seems to have swung by: Hannibal Buress, along with three others.

Enemy Mine – Review

In every moment, Enemy Mine strains for greatness. A B-movie with the stubborn assumption it’s anything but, it’s a film that’s constantly at war with itself: its visual and thematic scope is clawed asunder by clear budgetary restraints, and its straight-faced racial commentary is frequently undermined by an unaccounted-for camp. But its tender sincerity is enough to make it a valuable re-watch; a sci-fi that forgoes the explosions and genre excess to deliver something far more soul-searching and meaningful, especially in the gung-ho-heavy climate of the blockbuster circa 1985.

That Cold Day in the Park – Review

That Cold Day in the Park has received almost unanimously bad reviews since its release in 1969. Now getting a pristine Blu-ray transfer for a new generation to ponder over, its qualities shine brighter than ever; many may believe that this terrific film is largely composed of the faults that litter Robert Altman’s early work, such as a near-histrionic, feverish mood that squeezes through every frame – think of the much-debated dream sequence from 3 Women, a genuine Altman masterpiece. But it’s been severely underestimated on all fronts, and it’s time we recognised it for the lean, scathing, Modern Gothic oddball that it is.

Fire at Sea – Review

Some of the most powerful documentaries ever made simply let their subjects tell their stories themselves. If the observational route is taken to its furthermost point, like in 2014’s Maidan, we’re allowed a truer glimpse of real-life people and their real-life situations, for by removing the narrative voice of the filmmakers we get closer to the point they were possibly trying to make in the first place; that their movie is everything about what’s in front of the camera, and nothing to do with what’s behind it. In Fire at Sea, a sobering portrait of the European immigration crisis, filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi takes a similar approach – but to curiously little impact.

Suicide Squad director David Ayer praises Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn

If you’ve seen either trailer for Suicide Squad (and if you haven’t, do so now), then it’s a safe bet that one of the things you’re looking forward to most about the film is Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie. In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, the movie’s director David Ayer gushed much praise about Robbie’s portrayal of the character, which also happens to be one of his favourites.

A Jason Bourne preview reveals an important plot point

So far, the trailers, teasers and TV spots for the upcoming Jason Bourne have been really action-packed. Back in the fray with star Matt Damon is director Paul Greengrass, who made the two audience-favourite instalments The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, and it’s looking like the magic is back – but a new ‘Exclusive Preview’ from Universal’s YouTube page has revealed a rather spoilery plot point.
