Avatar: James Cameron wants glasses-free 3D for sequels

Avatar director James Cameron wants the upcoming films in the series to be NG-3D (No Glasses 3D).

THR reports that Cameron hopes to release all the sequels with glasses-free 3D and higher frame rates.

The director spoke of the future vision he sees for the franchise:

“I’m going to push. Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range and high frame rates,” he told an audience at the Society of Motion Picture Engineers.

Cameron went on to say that he is “still very bullish on 3D.” But believes glasses-free 3D is possible:

“Ultimately I think it can happen—with no glasses. We’ll get there.”

He also hopes to see higher frame rates:

“There may be some films that benefit from it, but I feel you still have to have a little bit of that veil of unreality that comes with 24 frames per second. I think you do it where you need it.”

Earlier this year, Cameron revealed that four Avatar sequels are in place. The first sequel is set to come out in 2018. The following three films will hit theaters in 2020, 2022, and 2023.
