Beauty and the Beast set to smash records at the box office

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast looks set to break records at the box office, according to early projections.

It may not open for another 10 days but Fandango reports that the live-action adaptation is already beating the pre-sales of both Finding Dory and Captain America: Civil War.

Civil War debuted at $179.1M while Finding Dory took slightly less at $135M in its first weekend. If Beauty and the Beast does beat Civil War‘s figures, it will break March’s all-time opening record, which is currently held by Warner Bros.’ Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166M).

Tracking last month estimated that the Disney reboot will make at least $110M in its opening. While many believe the film will make more in the region of $150M+, which Fandango’s latest report backs up. It’s also the fastest-selling family film in Fandango history.

One record Beauty and the Beast will certainly break is the best opening for a musical in cinema. The record currently belonging to Disney’s High School Musical 3 which made $42M on its October 2008 debut.

Beauty and the Beast arrives on 17 March, check out the trailer below in the meantime:
