Brie Larson is Captain Marvel, will this pave the way for Black Widow movie?

Oscar-winner Brie Larson is starring as Captain Marvel in the MCU’s first female-lead superhero picture.

Larson has been the rumored front-runner to play the superheroine for some time. Marvel Studios officially announced the casting at Comic-Con 2016. Larson additionally confirmed her participation in the film on Twitter.

For those that don’t know much about Captain Marvel, Larson will be playing Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who is exposed to alien DNA and acquires extraordinary powers. This includes flight, superhuman strength, speed, all that good stuff. Captain Marvel is expected to make her MCU debut in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War – Part I, which will pave the way for her standalone movie.

While it’ll be great to see a woman FINALLY take center stage in a Marvel picture, we’re still waiting for Black Widow to get her own movie. Speaking of which, during an interview with IGN at Comic-Con, director Joss Whedon actually expressed interest in making a Black Widow solo film. “If someone pointed at me and said, ‘Do you want to do a Black Widow movie?’, the answer would be ‘Duh!’” Whedon stated.

Whedon has created numerous strong, compelling female characters, most notably Buffy Summers. Because of this, everyone was hoping that he would helm Captain Marvel. Whedon made it clear that he wouldn’t be directing the film a few months ago, however. Still, if Marvel ever gets a Black Widow movie off the ground, they know who to call. Of course Whedon probably needs a break after directing 2012’s The Avengers and 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In any case, we can’t wait to see Brie Larson in action as Captain Marvel!
