Christian Bale disappointed with his performance as Batman
Christian Bale has admitted to feeling a bit let down with his own portrayal as Batman throughout the Dark Knight trilogy. Speaking with Yahoo! Movies, he says that donning the cape and cowl brought a lot of potential to the psychology of the character: ‘Batman is just this very, very, very dark, messed-up character,’ he says, ‘I found when I put on the suit, I went, I just feel like a bloody idiot if I don’t use this as a means to kind of… it’s his true, monstrous self that he allows to come out.’
But then Bale stated that the instant Heath Ledger showed up as the Joker, and with what director Christopher Nolan did with the trilogy, he felt that he perhaps didn’t reach the same heights in his role. He says, ‘Heath turned up, and just kind of completely ruined all my plans, because I went, “he’s so much more interesting than me and what I’m doing”… and so I sort of go, “I didn’t quite manage what I’d hoped I would through the trilogy”. Chris did, but my own sense of self was like, “nah, I didn’t quite nail it”.’
For an entire generation, Christian Bale is their Batman – and by our books, he did pretty alright with his portrayal of the caped crusader. A new iteration of the character, played by Ben Affleck, is due out on March 25 (that’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in case you were wondering).
