Christopher Nolan wouldn’t allow Harry Styles and co. to have water bottles and chairs on Dunkirk set
Christopher Nolan took an extreme approach to his directing duties on Dunkirk, not allowing the cast to have water bottles or chairs on set. The legendary filmmaker banned the items to help inspire the actors and keep them from “distraction”.
The film’s cast includes Tom Hardy, Fionn Whitehead, Harry Styles and Mark Rylance. And the latter told Independent about Nolan’s “very particular” directing methods:
“He’s very particular about using film and everything being real in front of the camera, so there were a lot of old techniques used in this film to make it look real. He does things like he doesn’t like having chairs on set for actors or bottles of water, he’s very particular. He has his eye on every aspect of the creation of the film.” said Rylance.
“He does things like he doesn’t like having chairs on set for actors or bottles of water”
When asked why these items were banned, Rylance’s co-star Barry Keoghan explained why:
“They’re distractions – the noise of [the bottles], they’re like toys almost, playing around with toys. [The lack of chairs] keeps you on your toes, literally.”
