Cinderella reigns supreme at the Box Office

Disney’s latest live-action adaptation is on track for an impressive £47.5m opening weekend in the US.

The Kenneth Branagh directed movie has also had a huge debut worldwide, claiming £90m at the international Box Office. The figures will only get better once the fairytale flick opens in the UK and in other territories.

Disney will see the result as further evidence that the recent decision to adapt other films from their animated back-catalogue has been fully vindicated. Just this week we reported on casting news for the Emma Watson headlined Beauty and the Beast, and the announcement that Tim Burton will direct the live-action version of Dumbo.

The Studio scored massive hits with Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent in recent years, but Cinderella lacked the star appeal of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. Instead stars Lily James and Richard Madden are largely unproven on the big screen, and as such success was far from guaranteed.
