Could Ray Parker Jr’s ‘Ghostbusters’ track not make it into the reboot?

‘Who you gonna call?’ Now you’ve got the Ghostbusters theme song stuck in your head. And why wouldn’t you? It’s one of the catchiest, most iconic songs ever written for a film – but the director of the planned Ghostbusters reboot, starring Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, is having a bit of a tough time on deciding how to use it in his new film, if at all. Speaking to E!, Paul Feig said of the tune – performed by Ray Parker Jr – that ‘It’s such an iconic thing that part of you goes, “I don’t want to change it”‘. He continues, ‘but then another part of you wants to update it… It’s one of the biggest questions we’re faced with.’

All this contention over what is essentially a pop song seems a tad overblown, but it is the Ghostbusters tune after all, and makes up a large part of its DNA when it comes to people’s consciousness of the franchise. Will Feig re-use Ray Parker Jr’s original track? Or will he get someone to record a fresh version? The director also said, ‘We have ways to bring it in that we’re playing with, so we’ll see.’ At least they’re considering it.

Ghostbusters will be released July 22, 2016.
