According to Deadline, Benedict Cumberbatch is in final negotiations with Marvel to play the lead role in their upcoming Doctor Strange movie. Joaquin Phoenix had been in negotiations to take the part earlier in the year, however a deal could not be reached as he was unwilling to commit to a multi-film contract. A deal with Cumberbatch is not yet in place however, as it will be contingent on juggling his schedule for the fourth season of Sherlock. But it’s worth noting that the BBC previously accommodated for Martin Freeman (who portrays Dr. Watson in the series), so that he could film The Hobbit trilogy.
