Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight to direct Pacific Rim 2

Two bad things can make a right: Steven DeKnight leaving Marvel TV series Daredevil as showrunner, and Guillermo del Toro finding ever-increasing difficulty in getting a sequel to Pacific Rim off the ground. Now it looks like DeKnight will be helming Pacific Rim 2, according to a report by Deadline.

When Universal removed the film from its 2017 slate, the fate of the movie was up in the air, despite del Toro – the director of the first film – stating that the project was still alive in some capacity. And now, it looks like it’s finally getting the go-ahead; what we’re worried about, however, is that Pacific Rim is a del Toro picture through and through. Will DeKnight try to emulate that, or bring his own brand of monster mayhem to play? We’re not entirely sure what to expect, as this will be his first foray into feature film directing – but if his previous credits as producer and creator are anything to go by (Spartacus and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are just a few), then we’re rather hopeful. Either way, we hope that Guillermo stays on in a creative capacity to some extent, and that the sequel keeps its rather awesome subtitle, Maelstrom.

Now all we need is a release date.
