Denis Villeneuve set to direct Dune remake
This week we were given our first look at long-awaited sequel Blade Runner 2049, with the first trailer starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. The film looks like it will be worth the wait and could be another hit from visionary Denis Villeneuve (Arrival), and it seems the director has his sights on another sci-fi film as his next project.
Word from Variety is that the Canadian director is in early talks to helm the remake of Frank Herbert’s Dune, which Legendary Pictures bought the rights to last month. And just like Blade Runner 2049, it could be a perfect fit for Villeneuve who has previously said adapting Dune was one of his dreams when he spoke to the same outlet back in September saying:
“A longstanding dream of mine is to adapt “Dune” but it’s a long process to get the rights, and I don’t think I will succeed,”
Villeneuve’s passion for the story makes him the ideal choice to resurrect the story, as long as he doesn’t fall foul to the kind of issues that plagued David Lynch’s 1984 version, which suffered from production issues and flopped at the box office. If the director is allowed to bring his ideas to the screen without interference, we may finally get the big-screen version many have been waiting for.
Blade Runner 2049 is released on October 6th, 2017.
