Diao Yinan’s Black Coal, Thin Ice wins Golden Bear at Berlin Film Festival

Though you would have been advised to place your money on Richard Linklater’s Boyhood to take home the grand prize at the closing ceremony at the Berlin Film Festival, instead the Golden Bear was surprisingly awarded to Diao Yinan’s Black Coal, Thin Ice. The Chinese thriller was considered to have only a small chance of picking up the prestigious award, but it’s eccentric, unique style seemed to have impressed a jury that consisted the likes of Christoph Waltz and Greta Gerwig amongst others.
