Did Johnny Depp Just Blow His Shot at Winning an Oscar?
There’s a lot of buzz currently circulating about Johnny Depp winning his first Academy Award for his performance as Boston gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger in Black Mass. Some would go as far to say that Depp is the current frontrunner in a competitive lineup of potential nominees that includes Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, and Tom Hanks for Bridge of Spies. Depp may have hurt his chances of winning, however, based on what he told BBC.
In the interview, Depp said that he doesn’t want to win an Oscar for any performance. “I don’t want to win one of those things ever, you know,” he commented. “The idea of winning means that you’re in competition with someone and I’m not in competition with anybody.”
Of course the main reason Depp doesn’t want to win is because he’s ironically not very big on public speaking. “I don’t want to have to talk.”
Since Depp wouldn’t have to say anything if he lost the award, however, he’d be fine with at least getting a nomination. “They gave me one of those things, like a nomination, two or three times,” Depp said. “A nomination is plenty.”
Has Depp hurt his chances of winning his first Oscar? Probably not, seeing how Sean Penn made similar comments about having zero interest in becoming an Oscar-winner. Yet, that didn’t stop the Academy from giving him the Best Actor Oscar twice. What do you think?
