Disney fans petition against whitewashing Mulan

Last year, Disney announced a Mulan live-action remake. However, with it yet to be revealed who will play the title character, fans have formed a petition online to prevent the film from another case of Hollywood whitewashing.

The petition, named “Tell Disney You Don’t Want A Whitewashed Mulan!” has over 90 thousand signatures.

The campaign urges Disney to cast an appropriate actress to play the Chinese Mulan:

This disturbing trend of whitewashing in big-budget movies can’t get a chance to take root in Mulan as well, and if any company can afford to ‘risk’ adapting a beloved story with a cast of POCs, it’s Disney, creator of the petition, Natalie Molnar, writes.

The 1998 original animated version was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook and followed a young woman who disguises herself as a man and goes onto to become a warrior and heroine for the nation.

Let’s hope Disney listens to the public and makes the correct casting call.
