Disney reboot another animation classic in live-action form
1998 hit Mulan is the latest from the House of Mouse catalogue to head to the big screen, following on from the recent global success of Cinderella.
Although a hit for the studio, Mulan isn’t as iconic as some of the other titles that were released in the late 90’s. The film centres on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, and perhaps the fact that it has been chosen at this time as the next film to get the live-action treatment is a more a sign of the emergence of the Chinese cinema-going audience.
The new script has been penned by Elizabeth Martin and Laura Hynek.
The animated version was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook and followed a young woman who disguises herself as a man and goes onto to become a warrior and heroine for the nation. It’s unknown if Mulan’s dragon sidekick Mushu will make it to the big screen.
There was a direct-to-DVD sequel in 2005.
Mulan joins the live-action remakes of Dumbo and Beauty and the Beast as well as a sequel to Alice in Wonderland and a new take on The Jungle Book.
