Disney has confirmed that Emily Blunt will be playing everyone’s favorite nanny in the newly titled Marry Poppins Returns.
The Mouse House announced in a statement that Blunt is officially on board for “a sequel to the studio’s 1964 classic.” Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical genius behind Hamilton and In the Heights, will also star in the film as a street lamplighter named Jack. Miranda notably composed the music for Disney’s upcoming animated feature, Moana.
This project will reunite Blunt with director Rob Marshall. The two previously worked together in Disney’s 2014 adaptation of Into the Woods.
“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation,” Marshall said in the statement.
Marry Poppins Returns hits theaters on December 25, 2018.
