20th Century Fox will be marching full-steam ahead with a remake of Escape From New York. According to Deadline, the studio has acquired the rights to the franchise which started with Escape From New York in 1981, and continued in 1996 with Escape From LA – both starring Kurt Russell as the iconic Snake Plissken, and both directed by cult filmmaker John Carpenter. Luckily for us, the remake will be overlooked by Carpenter himself as he boards the project as an executive producer, and will apparently ‘exert creative influence over the project.’ If the film is a commercial success, we’re sure that a sequel – probably a remake of Escape From LA – would come hot on its heels, and not wait 15 years to see the light of day like the original. But first thing’s first: who’ll step into Russell’s shoes and play Snake Plissken? It was rumoured for a while that Pacific Rim and Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam would take up the honour – but those have died down for now. A director and screenwriter/s are also yet to be announced at this stage – but how do you feel about a remake of the action classic Escape From New York?
