Fantastic Beasts 2 gets an official title
After much anticipation, the title for Fantastic Beasts 2 has been revealed. A year out from its release, Warner Brothers announced that the followup to the 2016 hit will be titled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
That title is in direct reference to Gellert Grindelwald, the character played by Johnny Depp and also the big bad of the new series. At the end of the first movie, the powerful Dark wizard was revealed and captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America).
Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. The sequel will follow the efforts of Albus Dumbledore, played by Jude Law, tracking down and defeating Grindelwald.
J.K. Rowling, who is writing all of the spinoff franchise’s scripts, previously explained that Dumbledore and Grindelwald were friends when they were teens. “Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was,” she had said.
David Yates again directs a screenplay by J.K. Rowling. Callum Turner, Zoe Kravitz and Jessica Williams are among the franchise’s new additions.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald hits theaters Nov. 16, 2018.
