Female “21 Jump Street” spin-off in the works

While there was news this week about more Ghostbusters films in development, it seems Sony have also moved to keep one of their other franchises, 21 Jump Street, energised. But rather than moving another sequel into production, it is set to follow the Ghostbusters blueprint by bringing a female-led spin-off to the screen. (via Deadline).

Rodney Rothman, who co-wrote 22 Jump Street as well as work on another Jonah Hill comedy Get Him To The Greek, is writing the script and is set to direct the film, that is set to go into production soon. Rothman has also recently turned in a draft of the proposed Jump Street-Men In Black crossover, but that project is still in development with James Bobin (Alice Through the Looking Glass) still attached.

In the first film version of the hit 1980’s drama, the female characters were Fugazy and Jr Jr, played by Dakota Johnson and Rye Rye though it seems highly unlikely that Johnson, in particular, would return for the proposed film given how her career has changed since then. Rye Rye did appear in 22 Jump Street so her involvement is perhaps the more likely of the two.
