Remember when Spider-Man 3 was released back in 2007? Many of its screenings were in glorious 4K from Sony – and now, years later, we’re getting the home version, as the world’s first 4K movies on Blu-ray are getting released next year, according to Engadget.
Sony has announced that in ‘early 2016’ it will be releasing their first 4K-ready films (otherwise known as Ultra HD). The selection will include The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Hitchcock, Chappie, Pineapple Express, The Smurfs 2 and Hancock. Yeah, we agree – not the best catalogue ever. Thankfully, Captain Philips and Ghostbusters may be getting the 4K-at-home treatment too.
There’s only one problem; you’ll probably have to replace your existing Blu-ray player, as more than likely it won’t be 4K compatible. Both Samsung and Panasonic are developing 4K-ready players, with the latter’s DMR-UBZ1 allegedly coming out in Japan in a matter of weeks. You may be in luck, however, if you own a Playstation 4, which in theory could be upgraded to 4K compatibility via a mere software update – of course, that’s up to Sony.
