Michael Fassbender in Assassin’s Creed.

Based on Ubisoft’s seemingly neverending video game franchise, Assassin’s Creed will follow Fassbender as Callum Lynch. An entirely original character, Callum will be a descendant of the Assassins society. By unlocking genetic memories, he will relive the life of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Learning from Aguilar’s experiences, Callum gains the skills needed to face the Knights Templar in modern day.

It’s been confirmed that Callum will exist in the same universe as the video games and the film’s events will be cannon. However, we’ve yet to hear if Altaïr, Ezio, Connor, Edward, or other fan favorites will make appearances. As long as Callum can handle a hidden blade, though, he should be able to stand on his own.

In addition to Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Ariane Labed are also set to star. Fassbender, Cotillard, and Director Justin Kurzel all recently worked together on the latest adaptation of Macbeth, which will be released this December.

Assassin’s Creed will start filming on Monday, August 31st, and opens in theaters on December 21, 2016.
