Frozen 2 officially announced

Really, who saw that coming? Frozen was one of recent memory’s hugest hits – and still is, thanks to the wonder of merchandising, and songs that remain stuck in your head months after you first hear them. The question of whether a sequel was happening was probably never asked – and now, we’ve got official confirmation that Frozen 2 is, indeed, going ahead. The confirmation comes from Disney themselves, in a press release:

Winter weather ahead! Frozen 2 is officially in development at Walt Disney Animation Studios with directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and producer Peter Del Vecho, the Oscar®-winning filmmaking team behind Frozen. The news was announced at Disney’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders this morning by Bob Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company; John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios; and actor Josh Gad, who provides the voice of Olaf from Frozen. “We enjoyed making Frozen Fever so much and being back in that world with those characters,” said John Lasseter. “Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.” A release date and production details are yet to be announced.

The press release makes it sound as if the filmmakers were spurred to make Frozen 2 after collaborating on Frozen Fever, a short that will be accompanying Cinderella at cinemas, but we all knew a second movie was coming regardless; the first one simply made too much money not too. And who could argue with that decision? The first Frozen movie, mainly thanks to its hit song ‘Let It Go’, is even bigger now than when it first came out; and while there are no plot details as of yet, perhaps lightning can strike twice?
