Ghostbusters reboot starts shooting, while new plot details emerge
This week, the much-anticipated Ghostbusters reboot has begun principal photography. Director Paul Feig and his team are currently shooting in Boston, which will be standing in for New York City (this is reportedly out of budgetary concerns). Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are Feig’s all-female ghostbusting team, and while the group are fighting monstrous apparitions on the streets of Boston, the Boston Herald managed to uncover a bit more detail in regards to the plot. Needless to say, their following report contains possible spoilers:
‘… Wiig and McCarthy play a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. Flash forward a few years and Wiig lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia U. (Like the original, the story takes place in New York City, even though it’s being shot in Boston.) Which is pretty sweet, until her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia.
Wiig reunites with McCarthy and the other two proton pack-packing phantom wranglers, and she gets some sweet revenge when ghosts invade Manhattan and she and her team have to save the world.’
Not dissimilar to the plot of the original, we think you’ll agree – although who knows where the story goes after this set-up. Chris Hemsworth will join the rest of the cast as their receptionist, presumably as a Janine Melnitz-type character, while yesterday Feig tweeted this teasing photo:
Also revealed this week, Emma Stone gave her reason for passing up on a role in the new film out of franchise commitment concerns. ‘It just didn’t feel like the right time for me,’ she told the Wall Street Journal, ‘A franchise is a big commitment — it’s a whole thing. I think maybe I need a minute before I dive back into that water.’ However, she did comment that the film’s script ‘was really funny.’
Ghostsbusters will be released on July 22, 2016.
