Ghostbusters sequel will happen, but it won’t have an all-male cast
Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot had a perfectly solid opening weekend, grossing an estimated $46 million domestically. It’s also made just over $19 million internationally, bringing the film’s grand total to about $65 million so far. Considering that the film cost $144 million to make, however, only time will tell if it will show a significant profit.
Nevertheless, Sony is still eager to move forward with a Ghostbusters sequel. Speaking with The Wrap, President of Worldwide Distribution at Sony Rory Bruer stated, “The Ghostbusters world is alive and well. I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise.”
Bruer went on to say, “While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen.”
Previously, there were reports that an all-male Ghostbusters sequel could be in the works. This film was rumored to star Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum with Joe and Anthony Russo behind the camera. Producer Ivan Reitman told The Globe and Mail, however, that this project was “never real.” He added that “there was a writer hired by the studio who did 30 pages,” but their work “wasn’t very good.”
While the new Ghostbusters film has received mixed to positive reviews, critics seem to universally agree that Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones were all terrific. If they do move forward with another Ghostbusters, we can’t wait to see these four hilarious women, as well as Chris Hemsworth, back in action.
