Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 reviews are a little mixed…

James Gunn’s much anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is almost upon us, but reviews are positive, if a little mixed. The film follows 2014’s unexpected hit Guardians of the Galaxy, success which seemingly came out of nowhere and established the Guardians franchise as one that could rival any other Marvel property. So the big question is, is the movie any good and how does it compare to the first?

Let’s break down a few reviews (expect ours later on in the week too). Firstly Total Film‘s 4 star review:

“despite many positives, [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2] fails to match the dizzying heights of the original.”

Empire, also award the film 4 stars, saying:

“There’s plenty to enjoy here.”

Variety point out:

“this time you can sense just how hard the series’ wizard of a director, James Gunn (now taking off from a script he wrote solo), is working to entertain you. Maybe a little too hard.”

EW say:

“It’s smarter than most films, but not as smart as the first one. It’s funnier than most films, but not as funny as the first one.”

Indiewire are a little harsher with their assessment:

“Much of the material gets rehashed with slight variations… and many of the space battles have a redundant quality.”

Whilst THR are even harsher:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 plays like a second ride on a roller-coaster that was a real kick the first time around but feels very been-there/done-that now.”
