Hellboy getting R-rated reboot; Stranger Things star to take over the lead
In the slew of superhero films over the past decades, perhaps none have been as underrated (and underseen) as Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy films.
Released in 2005 and 2008 respectively, the two films garnered great reviews but sadly didn’t explode the same way as the Marvel or DC films have and despite hefty budgets, the films together grossed under $300million across the globe.
But there was a big fanbase for the films despite this and hopes were high of a third installment, but in February, del Toro shot down hope on Twitter saying:
“Hellboy 3: Sorry to report: Spoke w all parties. Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it,”
The remedy? A third film is on way (via THR) but the series will be being revamped with a remake that will follow the recent trend of being R-rated. Acclaimed filmmaker Neil Marshall, the director of Dog Soldiers and Centurion as well as directing episodes of Game of Thrones and Westworld, is the man who is taking over and has secured David Harbour as his new Hellboy.
Harbour, who has starred in Suicide Squad and Quantum of Solace, is best known to modern audiences as Jim Hopper in Netflix’s Stranger Things.
No release date has yet been set but we could see the film in the next couple of years.
