Is a Game of Thrones Movie Happening?
Game of Thrones is certainly one of the most cinematic TV shows to ever grace the small screen. It’s only appropriate that this epic HBO drama, which recently dominated at the Emmys, will become a motion picture after the series ends. At least that’s what creator George R.R. Martin allegedly said according to Daily Star Sunday.
“There will be a movie but I will not be involved. I have too much to do. That is something HBO and D.B. and David are dealing with. I have two more books to finish and I still have so much to do. The pressure is on. I am such a slow writer and the fans get upset that I don’t write faster.”
While the movie would come out after the series concludes, an unnamed source claims that it won’t necessarily continue the story. Rather, it may be a prequel of sorts.
“With the ‘Game Of Thrones’ universe, there is much rich material and no constraints on when that story will take place. They are looking at dipping back in time during certain periods of the series, which could be examined as a one off plot. That means that some of the big characters who fans have seen die on screen could be resurrected such as Robb Stark, Catelyn Stark, Oberyn Martell and Ned Stark.”
Game of Thrones is currently going into its sixth season, which will premiere in 2016. After that, the series is set to have two more seasons. Show writer David Benioff has ruled out extending the TV series to 10 seasons, saying, “No way in hell because we know what the end is and we’re rapidly approaching it.”
We’d all love for winter to come to the big screen. Of course what we really want is for Martin to finish the final two books in the Song of Ice and Fire series already.
Update: George R.R. Martin has followed up on the accusations about a Game of Thrones movie, saying that the rumors are “Completely false. No one is working on any movie just now. And if there was a movie, it would not be about Robert’s Rebellion.”
It appears a Game of Thrones movie won’t be happening any time soon after all. For now, we’ll just have to settle for Entourage and Sex and the City 2…
