Jackie Chan says Warcraft’s success in China has “scared the Americans”

Warcraft may not have performed well domestically, but it’s broken records in China, becoming a huge success overseas. And Chinese superstar Jackie Chan believes this will have “scared the Americans”.

Chan told Shanghai International Film Festival (via The Hollywood Reporter):

Warcraft made 600 million RMB ($91 million) in two days – this has scared the Americans,”

“If we can make a film that earns 10 billion ($1.5 billion), then people from all over the world who study film will learn Chinese, instead of us learning English.”

“We hope the Chinese film industry gets even more powerful.”

Warcraft made $156 million (£109 million) in China over five days, while in the US, it managed just $24.4 million in its opening weekend.

Box office analyst, Jeff Bock told Variety that some films just appeal more to certain parts of the world:

“At some point you’re going to have a hugely budgeted film from a North American company that forgoes a North American release,”

“There are going to be more films that appeal just to that part of the world, the same way there are US films that do no business in the rest of the world.”

China is expected to overtake the US as the world’s largest film market in 2017.
