James Cameron on Kate Winslet in Avatar sequels and Disney/Fox deal

There are two major questions revolving around the Avatar sequels: who exactly is Kate Winslet playing and how will the films be impacted if Disney buys Fox? Director James Cameron recently provided some answers.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Cameron mentioned that Winslet would be a member of the underwater “sea people,” which is fitting seeing how the actress and director previously worked together on Titanic, the highest-grossing movie of all time until Avatar came along.

“She blazed through for a couple of days of rehearsals and saw the world that we had created, and how we do the work, and she’s very excited,” Cameron said of Winselt. “She plays a character who’s part of the Sea People, the reef people.”

In the same interview, Cameron added that if Disney succeeded in acquiring Fox, it likely wouldn’t effect the Avatar sequels.

“Probably not that much,” Cameron said in regards to the acquisition. “I’ve always had a good relationship with Fox. If they sold to Disney that wouldn’t be bad because Disney actually at this point in time has a bigger investment in Avatar than Fox does in terms of spent money.”

Pandora – The World of Avatar attraction is actually part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. So perhaps it would be fitting if Disney and Fox came to an agreement. Of course there is some concern that Disney will eventually get to the point where they own everything.

Avatar 2 hits theaters on December 18, 2020.
