James Wan to direct Aquaman

When Zack Snyder teased us with a photo of Jason Momoa in full Aquaman get-up, fresh from filming on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it instantly made the much ridiculed superhero look very cool indeed. And now Aquaman – not due out ’til 2018, mind – has a director in the form of James Wan.

You might recognise that name. Having helmed modern horror cornerstones SawInsidious and The Conjuring, Wan went on to direct Fast & Furious 7 – the biggest box office haul Universal has seen for a while. And now he’s changed course yet again, heading further into big budget tentpoles with Aquaman for DC. The film’s producer, Charles Roven, had this to say of the announcement:

‘James is not only a great storyteller but can make action truly explode on the big screen, and Jason [Momoa] has a dynamic presence that commands your attention. Together, they will bring an undeniable vitality and energy to this character as he headlines his first feature film.’

But Aquaman isn’t all that Wan has planned; he’s also rumoured to direct Robotech for Sony, which will be based on an ’80s anime. But let’s take one thing at a time, and firstly look forward to seeing Wan – and Momoa’s – take on this iconic superhero.
