Joe Carnahan’s Uncharted Script is batshit crazy
Joe Carnahan finished his impression of an Uncharted screenplay for Sony Pictures last month, he claims it’s ‘crazy’ and it’s completely in vain of the game series.
In an interview with ComingSoon.net, Carnahan says ‘When I wrote “Uncharted,” I didn’t spare the rod. I wrote it the way the video game is. They swear in the game, they’re kinda foul-mouthed and I kept all that stuff intact and I definitely didn’t write it as a “PG-13” movie, I wrote it the way that movie should be written.’
Carnahan explained he was given free reign by Sony to be creative, ‘They [Sony] let me kinda do my thing. I probably wrote four of the biggest, f***in’ craziest action sequences I think I’ve ever written in that movie. I used the “Uncharted” games as a template but not using anyone specifically…’
What’s incredible is that it looks like Uncharted maybe Rated R. Surprising as it’s very close genre wise to Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider, Sony could easily create a big budget Uncharted franchise with a PG-13 rating. Funnily enough, Carnahan was asked about the Indiana Jones comparison, ‘Listen, I’m a huge Indiana Jones fan, which was one of my interests in it and you have to remember you’ve got Sully as well, so it’s more of a buddy situation than just Drake solo…He has a line where he says, “They’re gonna be looking at real booby traps, not rolling boulder bullsh*t.” (laughs) [“Raiders of the Lost Ark”] is still arguably my favourite movie of all-time, but it was necessary to create those distinctions.’
We’ve been covering the development of the Uncharted film for a while at Flickreel, at one point it had Chris Pratt as a favourite for Nathan Drake, then Mark Whalberg who eventually dropped out of the project. There have been some rumours that John Krasinski could be circling the project, nevertheless, it looks like Sony are taking their time to make something reminiscent of the massive game franchise. We still have faith!
